Karin Van Ast, MA, LLC
Karin specializes in working with children and adolescents ages 5 to 18. Karin loves to work with families from diverse cultures and herself is an immigrant from the Philippines. She is sensitive to multicultural perspectives and takes into consideration a client’s cultural and historical background when creating treatment plans. Prior to becoming a counselor, Karin taught English as a second language (ESL) at the elementary school level while working with immigrants.
Karin values connecting with children and teens and understands that every child is unique and will incorporate the child’s interests into sessions. She is a creative person who includes expressive interventions such as art, play, creative writing, acting, or music in a session when appropriate. Karin sees the importance of identifying the emotions that need to be expressed, and seeks to help the client express such emotions in a healthy way.
Karin also brings a unique understanding of world-religion to the counseling space and can provide faith-based approaches to families who value this aspect in healing. Karin identifies as a Christian and is open to using this therapeutic lens if asked for by the family.
Karin also has a passion for helping parents find ways of reconnecting with their children. She often will incorporate caregivers into the treatment process as so much of the healing begins at home. Ultimately, Karin wants counseling to be an enjoyable experience for your child or teen. She would be honored to walk alongside you and your family!
